How to Fill in Eyebrows for a Thicker, Fuller Look

As Charlotte Tilbury has wisely informed us, “brows are the pillars of your face.” With new eyebrow treatments popping up everyday (see: microblading and lamination), we’re obsessed with getting back our brows after a decade of overplucking; 1990’s, we’re looking at you.

For natural, full, bushy-looking brows, take a look below for tips on how to fill in your eyebrows naturally without any expensive or painful treatments.

1. Prep your arches

Before going anywhere near your brows with pigment you need to prepare them and get your desired shape in place so that you have an outline to follow.

Use the Tweezerman Slant Tweezer at a 25° to pluck any unwanted hairs in the direction of growth. Tweezerman recommend starting with a warm washcloth to open pores and reduce the pain. The Glamcor Riki Graceful Mirror will magnify tiny, almost-unseen hairs we all struggle with so you can create a new, neat brow. Resist the urge to over pluck, skinny brows are not your friend.

Bush up brows with MUA Patrick Ta’s favourite; ICONIC London Brow Silk. Start by dipping the Brow Groomer into the formula and brushing through the hairs, flicking upwards and out to create a ‘feathered’ look. This will set your brows in place and make them look thicker while creating an on trend ‘soap brow’ finish.

“I’ve seen a lot of brow trends come and go over the years, but a style that’s here to stay is a natural, feathery look. I prefer creating the illusion of volume and density with ICONIC London Brow Silk for a fluffy effect.” - Patrick Ta

2. Pencil in eyebrow hairs

Next you need to fake it to make it and build up those sparse hairs. When choosing the right shade, Hourglass recommends the following: “Fairer skin tones should use cooler tones. As brow colours can turn red going for an ashier tone will work best. While deeper skin tones should use warm tones with no ash or grey undertones.”

Use the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil first to fill in the shape of the brow. Start at the tail of the brow, rather than the front as this is usually where the least definition is and this will give a more natural finish.

Add small strokes to mimic individual hairs and give micro-blade worthy effects. Use the spoolie on the other end of the pencil to blend the colour seamlessly threw the hairs.

"Fill in your eyebrows by brushing up your brows and shaping them using my Brow Lift eyebrow pencil. Using the pencil end, you can perfect your arch for eyebrows that frame your face. Then, using small strokes, apply Legendary Brows to add dreamy definition." Charlotte Tilbury.

3. Fill in eyebrows by layering extra products for more definition, density and dimension

Leaving your brows as they are with the pencil strokes will give you a more natural eyebrow look but for a strong, striking, defined brow - especially if like many of us, you haven’t had much hair there to begin with - then layer a brow gel, pomade, pen or powder on top to add volume and depth.

Use Benefit’s brow mapping technique to get the perfect arch: Using the image as a reference, starting at point A will slim the nose, arching at point B will lift the eye, and finishing at point C elongates the eye and lifts the cheek bone. When filling in the shape from B to C, be careful not to angle the brow downwards too much, as this will make eyes look tired. Not cute.

Benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil will add precision and shape while Benefit Gimme Brow+ add texture and fibres to thicken the look of the hair. Layering both will give you the most natural, fuller look.

Lime Crime’s Bushy Brow range is great when you want to go fluffy and feathered. Use a light hand when applying the Bushy Brow Precision Pen first in fine strokes in the direction of natural hair growth. Then comb the Bushy Brow Strong Hold Gel up through every hair to hold in place.

If pencils or pens aren’t your thing then Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade is another easy but effective way to achieve a natural looking brow. Check out our tutorial here on how to use the product.

4. Highlight and conceal for finishing touches

This is a great final tip for novices. You can use concealer and highlighter to hide mistakes, touch up your work for a sharper brow and give the illusion of a higher arch without the need for a steady hand.

Charlotte Tilbury The Retoucher is great for concealing above and below eyebrows along the brow bone as it has a built-in brush for easy application to create smooth, natural lines.

Dab Charlotte Tilbury Glowgasm Beauty Light Wand in Goldgasm on your brow bone, below and above your brow and blend to lift your brow and elongate your arch.
